Choosing a gas meter

  • Diaphragm meters suit low- and medium-pressure building service and tenant applications: proven, inexpensive, pulse output as standard. See the Itron Gallus G4 and the MTW G4 diaphragm submeter.
  • Thermal mass insertion meters read mass flow directly on process, biogas and combustion-air lines, with no pressure and temperature compensation to maintain.
  • Size to flow, not to the pipe.
  • Confirm pressure class and approvals before ordering; billing applications may need a specific meter type in your jurisdiction.

What gas submetering is used for

Scope 1 emissions. Combustion is a direct emission; metered therms are the defensible basis for the number, as covered in steam and gas optimization for Scope 1 emissions.

Boiler and process efficiency. Gas in versus steam or heat out is the only real efficiency measure, which is where gas metering pairs with steam metering and BTU meters.

What is a natural gas submeter?
A natural gas submeter measures gas consumption downstream of the utility's revenue meter, by tenant, by building or by piece of equipment. The utility meter bills the site; the submeter tells you which boiler, kitchen, process or tenant burned it.
Which gas meter type should I use?
Diaphragm meters cover most building service and tenant loads at low to medium pressure and cost the least. Rotary meters handle higher flows in a smaller body. Thermal mass insertion meters suit process, biogas and combustion-air lines and report mass flow directly without separate pressure and temperature compensation.
Can a gas submeter be used to bill tenants?
In many jurisdictions yes, but the rules on meter type, approval and billing practice are set locally rather than nationally. Confirm the requirement with the authority having jurisdiction before specifying, and keep the calibration and installation records for audit.
How does gas metering support emissions reporting?
Burning gas produces direct Scope 1 emissions. Metered volume converted to energy and then to CO2e is the defensible basis for a reported figure, and submetering lets you attribute those emissions to the boiler, process or tenant that caused them instead of to the site as a whole.
