    Natural Gas Meters

Natural gas submetering provides visibility into one of the largest — and least monitored — energy costs in commercial and industrial facilities. While utility meters track total building consumption, submeters reveal how gas is distributed across boilers, rooftop units, kitchen equipment, labs, and process loads.

Emergent Metering offers the Sage Model 51 thermal mass flow meter, which measures natural gas flow directly in mass units without requiring separate pressure and temperature transmitters. This direct mass measurement approach simplifies installation and improves accuracy compared to volumetric meters that require pressure and temperature compensation.

The thermal mass principle provides a 100:1 turndown ratio, accurately capturing both peak demand and low-flow periods that rotary and diaphragm meters miss. BACnet and Modbus outputs enable direct integration with building automation systems and energy management platforms. Common applications include boiler plant monitoring, rooftop unit gas consumption, laboratory exhaust makeup air units, and kitchen equipment submetering for multi-tenant allocation.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What type of gas meter is best for natural gas submetering?
For natural gas submetering in commercial buildings, thermal mass insertion meters are the most common choice due to easy installation and wide rangeability. Rotary displacement meters are preferred when revenue-grade accuracy is required for billing.
Can gas meters communicate with a BMS?
Yes. Our gas meters support Modbus RTU, pulse output, and 4-20mA analog signals for integration with building management systems, SCADA platforms, and cloud-based energy dashboards.
Do you provide gas meters for hydrogen or biogas?
Yes. Our thermal mass flow meters from Sage Metering can be factory-calibrated for hydrogen, biogas, propane, nitrogen, and other specialty gases in addition to standard natural gas.
