Energy Monitoring for Warehouses & Distribution Centers

Distribution buildings look simple and bill like they are not. Load is dominated by a handful of systems — lighting, HVAC or refrigeration, material handling, charging — and the difference between a well-run building and a poor one is almost entirely schedule and control, which only interval submetering reveals.

What to measure

Break the building into the systems that actually move the bill: high-bay lighting, HVAC or process cooling, conveyors and sortation, battery charging rooms, dock levellers and door heaters, and compressed air where packaging equipment runs on it.

For portfolios, consistency matters more than depth. The same five or six measurement points in every building make sites genuinely comparable; bespoke instrumentation in each does not.

  • Main service power with 15-minute interval demand
  • Lighting, HVAC/refrigeration, material handling and charging as separate circuits
  • Compressed air flow where packaging or automation depends on it
  • Temperature and humidity in temperature-controlled or ambient-sensitive storage
  • Square footage, throughput and operating hours to normalise across sites

Which hardware fits

Leased buildings and active operations rule out anything requiring extended outages. Wireless split-core CT sensors on the main distribution panels give circuit-level visibility in hours, and non-invasive installation means the change is reversible at lease end.

Multi-site portfolios need consistent connectivity more than they need exotic meters. Cellular gateways avoid dependency on each site's IT, and standard hardware kits make roll-outs repeatable across regions.

How the data turns into savings

Demand charges are the first target. Charging rooms, sortation start-up and HVAC recovery frequently coincide and set a monthly peak that a small scheduling change would avoid; interval data identifies the coincidence and quantifies the avoidable charge.

The second target is unoccupied load. In buildings with one active shift, off-hours consumption above 25-30% of occupied load nearly always indicates lighting controls, dock heaters or air compressors running unnecessarily.

Across a portfolio, ranked benchmarking is what compounds. Once buildings are normalised by area and throughput, the best-performing site becomes the standard, and each underperformer gets a specific, costed gap rather than a generic efficiency programme.
