Utility Metering Systems & Integration Components
Utility metering systems are the layer between the meters and the software: data acquisition servers, protocol gateways, pulse counters and converters that collect electric, water, gas, air, steam and BTU readings and deliver them to a BAS, an analytics platform or a billing system in one consistent format.
A meter that cannot deliver its reading is a stranded asset. Most metering projects fail at this layer rather than at the meter: mismatched protocols, no polling device, or a pulse output with nothing counting it. These are the components that close that gap.
What goes in a utility metering system
- Data acquisition servers poll Modbus meters, count pulses and push time-stamped data upstream — the Obvius/Leviton AcquiSuite A8812 is the reference device for mixed-vendor buildings.
- Monitoring hubs combine Ethernet, RS-485, pulse inputs and relay outputs in one panel-mount device, such as the Leviton VerifEye EMHSP-214 hub.
- Protocol gateways and converters bridge Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, BACnet MS/TP, BACnet/IP, LoRaWAN and MQTT — for example the Milesight UC100 Modbus-to-LoRaWAN converter for meters out of cable reach.
- Pulse counters pick up dry-contact outputs from water, gas and BTU meters that speak nothing else.
How to specify the integration layer
Work backwards from the consumer of the data. If it lands in a building automation system, BACnet-native meters or a BACnet gateway removes a translation layer. If it lands in an analytics or billing platform, Modbus polling into a data acquisition server is usually the cheaper path. Count the physical points, note which are wired and which are stranded, and minimise the number of protocol boundaries — each boundary is a device to buy, configure and maintain. Common mistakes
Specifying meters before deciding the protocol; buying a gateway per meter instead of one polling device per panel; forgetting that RS-485 is a daisy chain with termination and polarity rules; and leaving pulse-output meters with no counter, which is the single most common reason a commissioned meter shows no data.
